(BACKGROUND) HEADLINE: “Making

I’ve learned there’s a lot I can do if I keep trying.” COPY: Surround
a young boy with mountains, lakes, and woodlands to explore, caring
teachers and coaches to turn to, books to read and sports to
master—and his growth will be steady and sure. This is as true of boys
today as it was in 1945, when Harold P. Hinman
and William R. Brewster founded Hinman
and Brewster were convinced that ages 12-15 are a pivotal time in a
boy’s life. A time when community and environment become strong
influences on his attitudes and behavior. Cardigan’s
founders set out to create a community and educational environment
specifically designed to help young boys build the character, knowledge
and skills to realize their full potential throughout their lives. Over
the years, Cardigan continues to evolve in many ways, but the
School’s underlying beliefs remain unchanged. As do many
School traditions, from the sunrise hike that begins a boy’s Cardigan
experience, to the sunset hike marking the completion of his journey
here and readiness to meet new challenges. And
as each boy receives his diploma on graduation day, his Cardigan
teachers, coaches and mentors are second only to his family in the pride
they feel for the boy he has become and the man he will be. PARENT

(FAMILY ENVIRONMENT) HEADLINE: “What
surprised me the most, and still does, is how much people care here.
We’re like a family.” COPY: Most
of our faculty and over 90% of our students make Cardigan their home.
Therefore, we place as much importance on providing a stable, happy
living environment at we do on providing a quality education. Students
live in groups of 8 to 16 along with faculty members and their families
in home-like residences and dormitory buildings. Every
boy has a group of caring adults who watch over him: from his dorm
parents, teachers, and coaches, to club leaders and faculty advisers.
And every day brings with it the kind of support and guidance a boy
needs, from help with homework in a supervised study hall, to good
advice during a walk across campus. In
this way, Cardigan greatly expands the student-teacher relationship. A
teacher may coach a boy in the hockey rink, drop by his dorm to ask
after his studies, or congratulate him at the dinner table on a game
well-played. So whether a boy is excelling, struggling, or is somewhere
in between, he can count on caring adults to take notice and to reach
out, offering the recognition, encouragement, and discipline that he
needs. Daily
Routine
A
Cardigan boy has many daily responsibilities that keep him busy from
breakfast until lights-out. As a result, he graduates with work habits
and time-management skills that many college students would envy. Students
from near and far. The
Cardigan student body is comprised of boys from many different cultures
and economic backgrounds. Numerous religions are also represented on
campus, and the School’s Chapel program ensures that every boy can
pursue his spiritual development in keeping with his own faith. Keeping
families involved. Parents
are regularly updated on their sons’ progress in all areas and can
easily keep up with boys’ day-to-day routines. A secure Web site
allows parents to view progress reports, teacher comments, and projects
in which their children are involved. Each student has a phone in his
room and email access to help him keep in regular contact with friends
and family back home. Health

QUOTE: “When
a student knows he’ll be sitting across from you at the dinner table,
he tends to get his assignments in on time… after he graduates,
you’ll get an email or a postcard telling you how well he’s doing,
and it makes your day.”

(ACADEMICS) HEADLINE: “At
Cardigan, academics
is about more than just text books. I’ve
learned how to think for myself.” COPY: Cardigan
places great emphasis on effective study habits as well as
organizational and time-management skills. Mastery of these areas, as
well as core subjects, is crucial to a boy’s success in secondary
school. In
all areas and subjects, we make sure that each boy is being challenged
and supported in ways that are appropriate for his individual abilities.
Our academics program is designed to be easily tailored to the different
needs of different boys: •
A 4:1 student:faculty
ratio ensures individualized attention. •
4-15 students per class allows lively
discussion and participation. •
3 ability levels within each class lets a student learn at his own pace
in every subject and progress as rapidly as his abilities allow •
Daily study halls and nightly study periods for 1-on-1 instruction. •
Tutoring and specialized reading programs available as needed. Our
Faculty
Headmaster
Cameron “Chip” Dewar heads a faculty of
over 46 full-time and 5 part-time teachers. In addition to impressive
academic credentials and a love of education, the men and women on our
faculty boast a wide range of skills and experiences that greatly enrich
life on campus. Secondary
School Placement From
on-campus presentations to one-on-one guidance from faculty, Cardigan
provides students and their families with all the information they need
in the selection of secondary schools and the applications process. Leadership
Opportunities
As
active members of the Cardigan community, our students develop excellent
interpersonal and leadership skills at a young age. All students share
in the maintenance of the School and can earn the right to supervise
peers in daily duties. Boys can also hold elected positions as student
leaders and within the student government. SIDEBAR

gives boys the chance to explore and develop their extracurricular
interests through clubs formed by faculty and students. In recent years,
the School has had every type of club from film criticism to ice
fishing. Not
only do these activities give a boy engaging, enjoyable ways to spend
his time, and opportunities to discover new hobbies, they help him form
lasting friendships with other students and teachers who share his
interests. Weekends
Although
students can choose to spend weekends away from School, most boys spend
their weekends at Cardigan enjoying movies, outings, and special
activities. Mountain climbing in the fall, skiing in the winter,
canoeing in the spring; Cardigan is able to offer boys a range of unique
experiences due to its location amongst the spectacular mountains, lakes
and forests of New England. Parents may also choose to come spend time
with their sons on campus and explore the natural beauty of the region. SIDEBAR

COPY: Cardigan
seeks to enroll students of good character and academic promise who will
contribute to and benefit from the broad range of academic and
extracurricular opportunities available. Although
school records are one consideration for acceptance, the Admissions
Committee also seeks to enroll boys whose potential is greater than
their academic records reflect. Such students often flourish in our
structured and supportive environment, discovering within themselves
untapped reserves of ability and motivation. SUBHEAD: Accreditation COPY: SUBHEAD: Summer
